How to add a plant

How to ADD a new plant to your online plant list. Page 1

We all have plants and flowers we take care of. Now let me show you how to add a new plant to your online My Garden Pal personal encyclopedia.

  1. Log into My Garden Pal web site
  2. Click the My Shared Plants under the menu item Plant information menu
  3. Click the Add New Plant
  4. Now enter any information you know about the particular plant you want to include into your plant encyclopedia. You don't need to fill in all the fields but just enough for YOU to start with. Over the life of your plant you can add to this plant file as you learn more.
  5. Click save when you are done.

  1. Provide the botanical name, family, genus, and cultivars of the plant in the Botanic name, Family, Genus, and Cultivars fields respectively, as shown in Figure 1-2.

    Botanic name is the scientific name of a plant, also called the Latin name and Family refers to a group of species that share same characteristics. Genus represents a taxonomic group comprising closely related species and Cultivars refer to the varieties of the plants produced by breeding.

    *You must provide the Botanic Name

BotanicName : this is the official name of the plant - Wikipedia is the easiest place to find this information

  1. Provide the general description of the plant in the General description field

  2. Provide the quick reference name and the common name of the plant in the Quick reference name and Common names fields respectively.

    3.  

    The Quick reference name can be any name that helps you to identify plant. However, it is only used in the local database and is only for personal reference. For example, the Quick reference name for "Cyclamen" can be "Seventh Heaven" or "Mary" or 'pretty pink shady flowers'. 

     

    While providing details, you need to make sure that you have provided a Quick reference name. This is because this name will help you to search or recognize the plant.

     

  3. Click Browse button to add the image of the plant, as shown in Figure 1-3.

    The Open File Dialog box appears.

    In this example I have scaned the plant tag to identify the plant.

     

  4. Click Look in dropdown to browse the location of the image file for the plant.

  5. Select the image file and click Open. The Open File Dialog box disappears.

  6. Click to Upload to save the details of the plant and display your new picture

Note:

Ensure that the image is saved as a Jpeg, Jpg or bmp file and the size of the image is less than 100 KB. The recommended image size is 231 pixels wide and 173 pixels high.

 

You can save an image in any of these formats using any Picture Editing Software or using Microsoft Paint, which comes bundled with your Operating System. It is important to use any of the above given formats because these formats save the image as a small file. As a result the less space is consumed on your hard drive and you can keep collecting images in your database for many years.

 

The Photo Editor that you use can also be used to determine the proportion/measurement of the image before loading the image into My Garden Pal. If you edit an image in a Photo Editor, then you must load the image again to ensure the changes you made are reflected in the database.
