Hello to My Garden Pals!

Weeds are a phenomenon around the world.  What is a weed in your area may not necessarily be a weed where I am.  Still it is important to keep abreast of the issue with your local community.  Recently Queensland Australia has put out a new weed list that identifies some average every day plants as weeds.  They exist in most gardens around the area as ornamental plants, shrubs and hedges.  The reason they have been classed as weeds is the impact that they have on the local flora and fauna.

One such plant that is in many back yards running down the eastern seaboard of Australia is the Umbrella Tree (Scheffera actinophylla ).  In its natural habitat in Northern Queensland it is kept under control by other fast growth dense trees.  But growing it below the Tropic of Capricorn it will out-compete local and native species.  It is a prolific seeder, invading national parks, remnant bushland, undisturbed forests and reserves, causing harm to local ecosystems’ flora and fauna.

Gardeners can make a big difference simply by recognising invasive species and opting not to buy, grow or exchange them, and by never dumping garden waste in the bush.  I encourage everyone to make a difference.

Next month in Australia we have Weedbuster week September 1-7 get involved by visiting Weedbusters .

How My Garden Pal Helps Weed Identification

In My Garden Pal you can help identify invasive plants and weeds in the warnings area of your desktop program.  Even if this is not a weed in your area you can still fill this section in for reference to others around the world when you share your plant information to My Garden Pal online encyclopedia.
